News is that Sony Corp will sell three new Vaio all-in-one PC models that will include high-definition Blu-ray disc drives. The Vaio JS model will include a 20.1-inch LCD, Windows Vista Home, and an optional Blu-ray disc drive. The Vaio LV model will feature 24-inch LCD, available Blu-ray ROM drive, available rewritable Blu-ray drive, built-in DVR functionality, and a 1080p HDMI input. The Vaio RT model sports a 25.5-inch LCD and built-in Blu-ray optical drive to play, record, and edit HD video, an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, up to 8GB of RAM, and more. The product includes a built-in Blu-ray disc drive for high-def movies and a new Dualshock 3 controller with rumble functionality.

Toshiba this month began selling the new XD-E500 up convert DVD player in an effort to capitalize on consumers unwilling to invest in Sony’s Blu-ray format. The player is said to provide standard DVD images closer to high-definition quality, allowing consumers to utilize their existing DVD library.

When this is happening Samsung is predicting that Sony’s Blu-ray technology to be superseded within five years, despite winning the high definition format war in February.

What makes this one any different? Well to begin with, Big and Turner and Hooch were fun comedies, but Joe Vs. The Volcano is something more. It’s a great comedy, yes, but it’s more than that, even. The movie is sort of a Rocky story. It contains the meaning of life. Hanks begins as an everyman, selling his time for, as he puts it, “Three hundred dollars a week”.

The film starts off with Joe slaving away at a miserable, miserable job. The industrialist uses an island, the Waponi Woo, for mining, and in order to keep the people happy, he must sacrifice someone to their volcano God, lest he get mad and blow the whole island up. The chief of these people would rather someone from his own tribe do the deed, but they all seem a bit too cowardly. Joe is more than happy to give his life and die like a man, since it’s that or waste away on a hospital sickbed.

Joe is made to fully appreciate what a gift life is. By accepting his death, by having nothing to lose, Joe is able to do anything he wants in life, including jumping into a volcano. This is where the movie’s philosophy lies, this is the meaning of life: Enjoy it for what it is. Don’t worry about the afterlife, don’t worry about mortality or bills or rent, don’t let the troubles of the world get you down, just appreciate every moment for what it is.

The look of the film is similarly wonderful. Bo Welch really sends it out of the park on this one. The film takes place in a sort of fantasy mirror universe of our own. Taking cues equally from Dali and Andy Warhol, the film looks like a living dream.

With the advent of a new generation of high density discs to replace DVDs, it is easy for consumers to be confused about which format to upgrade to. The two competing formats, Blu-Ray and HD DVD, both offer a significant upgrade in video and audio quality; but as standalone players for both formats can retail for several hundreds of pounds, it is understandable that consumers do not want to end up buying the new Betamax.

In terms of technical performance both formats are similar, and show little discernible difference to the average consumer. A dual-layer Blu-Ray disc offers 50GB of storage space, compared to 30GB on a dual-layer HD DVD disc, but as of yet, only 40% of Blu-Ray releases are dual-layer, with the remaining 60% being single-layer discs utilising 25GB of storage space. Still, even when comparing a 50GB Blu-Ray disc with a 30GB HD DVD, the difference to consumers will be minimal. Both formats support the MPEG-2, VC-1, and H.264 formats for video compression, and Dolby Digital, PCM, and DTS for audio compression. As a result, this battle of formats is going to be waged mainly via the titles available and the price and quality of players.

Initially, both formats were supported by all of the major studios, but as different studios have different stakes in the two formats, major studios started to drop formats. For example, Sony, owner of Columbia and TriStar Pictures, is one of the major developers of the Blu-Ray format, and has decided to drop HD DVD for its releases.
