It was horrifying to hear that a number of females within my town had been attacked while going home at night in those past few weeks. Being a waitress in a diner, I went home after dark, too. What frightened me the most then was that I didn’t have sufficient physical strength for safeguarding myself.

Working at a 24-hour food joint is not something that I intend to do forever. However, in the meantime, it helps me settle the bills and that is exactly what matters. Besides holding dreadful evening shifts, though, I often have to cope with dubious people from the drive-through window.

A pal called me to request for assistance one evening just lately. She had been mugged on her way going home. Her handbag with all her cash, credit cards and cellphone had been taken from her. Fortunately, she had committed my phone number to memory and managed to make a phone call from a payphone.

Going out at night is not as safe as it used to be. A lot more bad guys wander the streets, looking for the most innocent-looking people to make into their next victims.

I was absolutely heartbroken when I found out that my only child was assaulted one evening in campus. Thankfully, she was not seriously injured, coming out of the incident having a number of cuts and bruises. Nonetheless, I felt that I failed at safeguarding her.
